At my school we believe in educating the whole child in both character and academics. We base our character program on the research summarized Character, Strengths and Virtues. The research shows that the students who have the 24 key character strengths are more likely to succeed then students who may have other advantages but not the 24 strengths. We explicitly teach these strengths throughout the year. A key component of the character program is the weekly celebration where they participate in an activity aligned to the character focus for the week. For example they will use ritz crackers and M&M's to create faces, this activity is aligned to the self-control character strength. During the week leading up to the celebration students learn how to regulate their own emotions by first identifying them. Celebration is a key time for student reflection on individual and group character achievement. My scholars work extremely hard in their small groups and should be rewarded for such! I will reward them with books, snacks, hats, scarves, socks, coloring books and crayons, and backpacks. Our goal at KIPP is to teach the whole child, emphasizing both academics and character, and with weekly celebrations our scholars internalize the importance and joyfulness of achieving our goals. Even though we have very limited resources it is our goal to create a meaningful and engaging experience unlimited by our budget constraints.
