I work with a largely disadvantaged population in an inner city where supplies and activities are often limited or unavailable. The school has over 1,200 students who range from kindergarten to 8th grade. Due to lack of offerings, financial stability, and transportation, many of these students are denied the opportunities afforded to their counterparts in the neighboring towns. The students are interested in so many different things, yet they often do not have the ability to explore these interests. These are resilient children who struggle to find a place where they belong. Teamwork is a skill that is often lacking yet, strongly valued. Only together can we help these students reach their potential and abilities. Giving these students something to look forward to can often change their whole attitude towards school and learning.
