Funded Aug 12, 2020I cannot even articulate how excited my students were to find out this project had been funded. Especially with everything going on in the world today-I want them to be inspired to grow up and fight for change. Changes to help their communities and changes to help increase the equity in our society. These books were about inspirational historical figures who did just that. They had the courage to stand up and fight for what they deserve and that's exactly what I want for my students.
They not only LOVED hearing the stories, but we also have planned a social justice themed wax museum for when things get back closer to normal. Each student will dress up as one of the figures they read about and give a speech about the influence they had on their communities. They have already begun working on their backdrops.
Their personal favorite is Dream Drum Girl which is about a very determined girl in Cuba who shook mores to become a drummer, when it was only an acceptable path for boys. We have read it numerous times now.
We are truly grateful for your generous donations. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Trayers
