Can you imagine being in a classroom full of students who are fluent in a language you are still learning? How intimidating! English Language Learners work on mastering the four domains of language: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. An iPad provides endless resources for practice in all four domains. For example, students can read an assignment they have written to the camera, and then watch it back to listen for improvements. They can watch themselves improve over time - literally! Most importantly, each student can choose a skill to work on at his or her exact proficiency level which boosts confidence and greatly eliminates the potential for anxiety. The options for apps are endless.
An iPad will allow lessons to become visual, seamlessly scaffolding to a specific students' level while igniting background knowledge from their native language through the ever-evolving world of tablet applications.
In addition to individual work, students can collaborate with students similar to them locally and around the world through the Google suite of applications and with portfolios such as SeeSaw. As an ELL teacher, communication with parents is often difficult. An iPad provides a wide variety of translation options to make daily parent communication and involvement easy and consistent. The iPad Pro, specifically, allows for the ultimate manipulation of digital materials to best meet the needs of my ELLs. They will be able to draw and type directly on to the screen, making math and writing lessons more exciting and motivating. Overall, an iPad would be an excellent addition to our ELL classroom. The impact will stay with them for a lifetime!
