My school is an inner city magnet academy. My students come from a diverse set of backgrounds. Many of my students leave school to face struggles at home or in their neighborhoods, but during school each student hopes to be successful and achieve their goals due to the rigorous standards we set for them. My students are in a magnet school setting because they can handle the academic rigor they are faced with, and do not want to attend the unfortunate situations at their neighborhood school. They all have high hopes for their futures, regardless of the environments they are faced with at home. Unfortunately, the inner city location leaves little room for resources. My students want to become more than they're expected to be, and to help them do this, I need novels that will enable them to be challenged and grow into the successful individuals they hope to one day be. Novels, such as Night, allow my students to build connections across races, cultures, and world issues.
