  • Getting My Students Talking About Various Cultures and Disabilities

    Funded Aug 26, 2022

Thank you again for your generous donations toward the two sets of novels for my classroom. My two English classes have already begun the book "Fish in a Tree", which is about a girl with dyslexia and how she finds her voice with her new teacher, Mr. Daniels.

My students are excited to get a brand-new books to read. Some of our other novel sets are in less than pristine condition. They are happy they are the first students to read them.

Your support means the world to my students and me. It's very exciting to see my students genuinely interested in reading!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Smith

  • A "Wonder"ful Way To Teach The Standards!

    Funded Aug 17, 2016

By being able to utilize the book "Wonder" with my two English/Language Arts classes, I am not only able to introduce them to a world where not everyone looks the same as us, but also a world where we can accept and embrace such differences.

I plan to use these books to introduce new and exciting vocabulary to my students, as well as spelling words that are new to them. Students will be able to summarize chunks of the story, evaluate what they have read, and determine how they would act in the same situation. And of course, I can introduce my students to the "Be Kind" movement, which goes along with this story. There are many You-Tube videos about students who are afflicted with the same facial abnormalities as the main character, and I plan to show my students how kids can look different but be similar on the inside. Finally, a major motion picture based upon this book is being planned, so I can hopefully have the students compare and contrast the book with the story.

My students are anxious to begin reading these books when we come back to school from winter Break. And I'm excited to read it with them!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Smith

This year my fifth grade English students will read the novel "Wonder", the book that inspired the Choose Kind movement. The themes in this novel involve being kind to others, accepting others' differences, and learning to be yourself. This story is about Auggie Pullman, a boy who was born with craniofacial abnormalities, who was homeschooled for most of his life. Auggie will be attending a private school for the first time, and my students will learn the truth of Auggie's journey and what it means to them as individuals. Each section of the novel is told through the point of view of a different character, which helps readers better understand the choices made by some of the characters.
