Funded Aug 17, 2016By being able to utilize the book "Wonder" with my two English/Language Arts classes, I am not only able to introduce them to a world where not everyone looks the same as us, but also a world where we can accept and embrace such differences.
I plan to use these books to introduce new and exciting vocabulary to my students, as well as spelling words that are new to them. Students will be able to summarize chunks of the story, evaluate what they have read, and determine how they would act in the same situation. And of course, I can introduce my students to the "Be Kind" movement, which goes along with this story. There are many You-Tube videos about students who are afflicted with the same facial abnormalities as the main character, and I plan to show my students how kids can look different but be similar on the inside. Finally, a major motion picture based upon this book is being planned, so I can hopefully have the students compare and contrast the book with the story.
My students are anxious to begin reading these books when we come back to school from winter Break. And I'm excited to read it with them!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Smith
