This project is specifically geared toward helping struggling readers access the ninth grade English Language Arts curriculum, specifically surrounding the reading of the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird." This novel is an essential part of American literature and helps students understand issues of race, justice, and coming of age. Unfortunately, many of my students struggle to grasp its important themes due to low reading levels and language barriers. Your donation will help give the students another way of understanding the novel's important themes, by allowing them to read a visual version of the text in their literacy support class. Many struggling readers prefer graphic novels; they find that visual supports aid them in reading comprehension. This donation will improve their reading skills as well as their writing skills, since they will be asked to conduct a literary analysis of the novel at the end of the unit. Your donation will help all students gain a thorough understanding of the story and its importance in American literary history. This set of books will be donated to a literacy support class, which is a class for at-risk students that supports their regular English class. Therefore, they will also read the text version of To Kill a Mockingbird, but will be supported through the reading of this newly published graphic novel in an accelerated format in order to improve their chance of success in their English class and keep them on track with their peers. Thank you so much for your support and your donations! We really appreciate it!
