Building global competencies through literacy is a task all teacher's dream of achieving in their classrooms. I recently discovered the most viable and revolutionary way to get there! While attending the California STEAM Symposium in Long Beach, CA, I was blessed with a session put on by the brilliant ladies of the California Global Education Project. They focused on their Global Book Bag Project and I was instantly hooked.
This organization has developed a completely free collection of book lists, mentor questions, and project guidelines to assist teachers in implementing instruction of the Global Competency Standards and Sustainable Development Goals through literacy! Their project promotes environmental literacy and global citizenship, without having to leave the classroom.
I was instantly inspired and read to bring these rigorously engaging books, full of global lessons, into my classroom to help my students explore the world with curiosity! Through these selections, students will be exposed to thematic messages that will allow them to build the capacity to consider multiple perspectives and opinions, engage in civil discourse, empathize with others, and recognize the value of each person in our global community. I believe these life lessons to be invaluable and am ready to do what it takes to deliver.
However, as you can imagine, the cost of obtaining the books needed (one per student of very specifically vetted books), will be a hurdle to implementation. Your assistance in helping me bring these titles and this project to life in my classroom would be indescribable!
