  • Help These First Graders SOAR

    Funded May 2, 2019

Thank you so much for your kind donation to build my library! While it is still early in the school year, the books are helping the students in their development as great readers!

While we are still just a few weeks into the school year, the students have been busy with the books. They have been partner reading nearly every day, working on word decoding skills, and reading fluency.

First graders make a tremendous amount of reading growth throughout the year, and wide variety of texts is necessary to support their growth. Your generosity has made a huge impact to the beginning of these students reading journey.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Woodson

Spreading a joy and love of reading is an important part of my classroom. We spend a lot of time talking about picking books that are a good fit. My students are very apt at finding books for independent reading time , but the problem occurs when they are in a small guided reading group with me. Guided reading is small group instruction that is differentiated to student reading level. The real challenge is finding interesting books at a specific reading level, and having enough for the the entire group. Differentiated instruction is an integral aspect of my classroom. I firmly believe that at any level, students should be able to read a text that is interesting and engaging. This has been a real struggle in my classroom to find enough books to meet with my groups of students. These books are both fiction and nonfiction texts that share a similar theme, and I am so excited to talk about a topic and explore it through narrative and nonfiction! What an amazing way to engage with content in a developmentally appropriate way.
