Though I was lucky to receive a large number of books from a retiring teacher, many of these books are outdated and don't reflect the students in my classroom. I used various book lists to find books that reflect all of my students' ethnicities, immigration status, gender, and interests. Books like Rad Girls Can: Stories of Bold, Brave, and Brilliant Young Women, American Born Chinese, Sold, and A Time to Dance better represent who my kids are. Many of my kids struggle with reading but the real challenge for them is to find stories that they can see themselves in.
