My students read four books throughout the school year. However, none of them have a main character that the students can easily relate to. We are trying to change that! Many of my students face challenges that differ from the typical ten or eleven year old. They come from backgrounds that include cultural challenges and poverty, which often leads to difficult living situations. Being in a developmental period in their lives it is difficult for them to process and deal with those things in and out of the classroom. With their minds racing about other things it is often hard to get them excited about reading, especially when the characters have little in common with them. Many of these students are native Spanish speakers who have recently learned, or are in the process of learning, English. They close the gap by pushing themselves to work hard, especially when their family is counting on them to come home and teach them the language. These students need avenues for dealing with the challenges that they are presented with. Reading will, hopefully, be one of those ways.
