Classroom Books

Funded Dec 8, 2015

I want to thank you again for your generous donation to my fifth grade classroom. My students absolutely love the books you have donated and we are all so grateful to you. As a teacher at a school with high poverty, it is amazing to see my kids appreciate new classroom books. They love the fact that they are the first ones to use them and are very protective of them!

Teaching reading is an extremely difficult task. Some of my students are English Language Learners and can only read text at a first or second grade level, while some of them are already reading at a high school level! Your books have allowed me to organize students in to reading groups, so I can differentiate how I teach the same text to my students. Some of my students are reading and completing comprehension questions on their own, while some of them are working in small group with me to analyze the text on a level that they can better understand. Differentiation is extremely important when teaching reading and you have given me the opportunity to be a much better teacher by providing me with the tools I need to do that!

My students especially love the book, "The Giver." I remember reading it as a child and many of my students have seen the movie version. Being able to experience it with them all over again is amazing. One student has even read so far ahead that she finished the book! I purchased the sequel to the book and am allowing her to read it and complete assignments, while the rest of the class works to finish the first book. Other students really love "My Side of the Mountain" and have enjoyed completing assignments where they imagine what they would do if they were in the book.

I hope this has given you some idea of how much your donation means to all of us. It is difficult to see the impact you are having without actually being in the classroom yourself, but I can assure you that you are changing lives with your donation. Thank you, again. I will forever be grateful to you all for giving my students the opportunity to read such amazing pieces of literature.”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Lamb
