The use of wiggle cushions, balance balls, pillows, and chairs will allow my students to become more active participants in learning. These tools will be used during small group instruction and independent work time. Along with behavior issues, many of my students also have attention problems, being able to move and change their learning environment can eliminate potential behavior issues. For example, during Math, I have a few students that have difficulty sitting in their desk. Having these students use balance balls or wiggle cushions during math will help them focus while allowing movement breaks. They will have the opportunity to develop or enhance many skills such as critical thinking, time management, teamwork, collaboration and most importantly respect. My goal with flexible seating is to witness my students become more invested in their education. I feel this will provide a change in their commitment to learning and behavior. As stated by Kayla Delzer “Outside the windows of our classroom is a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing world full of choices. How can we expect our students to solve problems and make choices independently if we constantly solve their problems and make their choices for them?”
