Over the last year, I have been learning about all of the amazing ways a book can transform the minds of children in my graduate coursework. It is not just about the quantity of books in a classroom library, but more importantly, the quality of the books. A book should be culturally relevant, meaningful, and inspiring for my third grade students.
I have been doing my best to ensure that my students will have their choice in selecting these types of books in my classroom library; however, there is still plenty of shelf space that you can help me fill up!
In addition, I want to provide my students with a reading center that fits their needs. To make the most of their learning experience, I want to provide a space with comfortable carpets, beanbags, chairs, and pillows. Also, studies have shown that struggling readers become more confident in their skills when they have a buddy to read with, therefore I want to provide students with a set of classroom "reading buddies" in the form of stuffed teddy bears.
I plan to have the books available for students in our classroom library. Students will be lead in discussions on how to choose "just right" books so that they are reading books appropriate for their level during independant reading time. In addition to this, I will be using the books during interactive read alouds and closed reading.
The chair, stools, and beanbags will be available for students to use as part of my flexible seating arrangement. Students will will be chosen daily to choose an alternative or flexible seat. This will be exciting and new for my students.
I am so excited to be taking this new role in my community, but I cannot do this alone--it takes a village to raise a child. Anything can help my students. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you!
