Project Lit is a reading list of 145 books, with new ones being added each semester. Their focus is on Diverse reads with Own Voices authors. They have an excellent selection of books and they encourage their book clubs to let students choose which books they want to read off the list and then have an informal meeting with each student telling the others what they read about, why they liked it (or didn't) and why they think the book is important. These books can be heavy, but they talk about HARD topics which can get students talking about things they might not otherwise talk about. My idea is to get 2-3 copies of each middle grade book and maybe 1 of each YA book for our more mature readers to start with. Later, as the book club grows, my hope is that the ELA teachers will adopt these titles as classroom reads and I can get class sets. This will provide another outlet of self expression for our diverse student population and allow them to see themselves reflected in literature.
