  • Preparing Students to Learn: Personal Care Kits for Every Child

    Funded Jul 24, 2018

The phrase "thank you" doesn't begin to cover the gratitude I have for each of you. Because of your generous support, my students will be able to begin the year with the supplies they need to be healthy and prepared for class. I can't wait for these kits to become part of our classroom's daily routine. This project may not show up on their state testing or be connected to their standards, but it will have an immense impact on their education and success this year. I couldn't have done this without you. THANK YOU!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Wakefield

  • Learning History Through Picture Books

    Funded Sep 10, 2017

Again, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting my classroom! Because of you, we have been able to explore events of the past through engaging literature. I believe that teaching history is basically telling stories of our past. And these stories are best told by those who were there. Because of your generosity, we have traveled back in time to be a colonist in New England. We've interviewed both King George and George Washington about the Revolutionary war, and we've researched women who persisted, African-Americans who invented, and historical figures who inspired.”

    With gratitude,

  • Marking Our Reading Successes With Flags!

    Funded Jul 24, 2017

Thank you so much for making this project possible! My students were so excited to open the the flags and get to use them. It may seem silly, but there's something magical about getting to use a little plastic book clip rather than a tattered post-it note to mark evidence. It has also improved my students' confidence since they can easily move around their clips.

With your help, I was able to change the way we run reading groups. Now we can use our reading and comprehension strategies confidently everyday!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Wakefield

  • Picture Books Are For Big Kids, Too!

    Funded Oct 3, 2016

Thank you so much for making this project possible! My students were so excited to open the boxes of books and dig in. Several students exclaimed, "Oh, that's one of my favorites!" and "Ooh! Can I read this one?" It has been exciting to watch them rediscover picture books as 5th graders who previously thought they were too old for them.

Reading in our classroom looks like many things. We read pretty much all day, and enjoy sharing our favorite books and authors. However, reading class took a turn when we found ourselves limited to several "program" books that were clearly created to be read for specific lessons. When I started to see my students' enthusiasm for reading decline, I knew I had to do something. With your help, I was able to change the way we run reading groups. Now we can engage with interesting, inspiring, and beautiful texts to accomplish our learning goals.

With your continued support, I look forward to expanding our library further.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Wakefield

My students love to read! They are fortunate to be exposed to a school and classroom library that is constantly growing and adapting to their interests and needs. However, when it comes to small group instruction, that variety isn't there. Unfortunately, most short fiction texts are written on a third grade level or below or are extremely boring. It has been said, "what is a bookshelf, but a treasure box for a curious mind?" I feel as though it is my responsibility to keep the curious minds of my students actively engaged. With well written, beautifully illustrated, and high level picture books, my students will be able to engage in comprehension strategies and critical thinking skills that are meaningful. After all, picture books are for big kids, too!
