I have initiated this project to ensure the English Language Learners in my class get the same extensive opportunities that their counterparts have, with rich exposure to their new language and the ability to increase foundation skills mastery. I chose iPad products because the touch screen does not require previous computer skills or background knowledge of the product, so they can hop into the skills at the onset of the year and increase fluidity in the use of technology, as the school year progresses. The built in microphones allow students to use the language acquisition program provided by the school district to practice their new lingual capabilities and repeat back to the iPad. Each new day in a Kindergarten class, students are given a variety of opportunities to show what they know and increase their knowledge base in a topic. Students are exposed to a variety of manipulative tools like counting blocks, letter cubes, magnetic sentence builders, interactive lessons, books, models and building dough. These tools are all extremely useful but often destroyed with their heavy hands and new sensory motor skill refinement. An iPad is capable of providing that hands-on experience for learning without being progressively demolished as center activities, puzzles, books and manipulatives often are. iPads provide students a highly reusable base for them to dive into learning and growing in a technological world.
