  • Needed: Books for Love of Reading Week 2025!

    Funded Feb 12, 2025

Thank you, truly, for your kind donation. The money that you donated went to purchasing books for a huge literacy event that we host at my high school each year. We solicit donations from around the community so that we can are able to offer books to anyone who comes to the event. But it's often quite difficult to find books that are representative of our student population. Which is where your donation comes in! The books that we purchased with your kind donation included LGBTQ+ titles, BIPOC titles, and stories that students can relate to. And, as you can see from the photos, the students loved their books. We were able to find books for anyone who came to the event. Some kids or families took home just one, but some took home boxes. And it was such a wonderful feeling knowing that these students and families were able to find books that they were interested and excited in and able to take them home. Thank you so much for helping us make this event a success. We will continue to host this event for years to come, so I hope you come back to DonorsChoose next year and find our project and help us again!”

    With gratitude,

  • Community Building Through Art!

    Funded Oct 11, 2023

Thank you so much for this generous donation! My students have been having a great time making friendship bracelets for each other as we build our classroom community. It was amazing to see everyone so excited to learn how to make the bracelets; they were using youtube tutorials and so engaged in their work that they weren't even watching the clock!

We will use a lot of the other materials next semester. I plan to show the kids the affirmation cards as we move into the new semester so that we can start on a positive note. And we will make tie dye shirts in the spring as the weather gets warmer.

Thank you again for your kindness!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Bodanyi

  • 2024: Love of Reading Week!

    Funded Sep 12, 2023

Thank you so much for donating to this project! With the books that your donation helped to purchase, plus other books from around the community, we will put on a Love of Reading event in the spring where each person who attends, whether they were an adult, a student, or a younger sibling, will leave with at least one free book. We did this last year too, and it was amazing!

I have the books displayed in my room at school, and the kids keep asking about them so I think our spring event, Read Across the Barrio, will be a huge success!

Thank you again for your generosity; we really appreciate it.”

  • Garden Club Supplies!

    Funded Sep 20, 2023

Thank you so much for your kind donation!

We've set up our worm bins and the kids have been having a great time playing with worms and learning more about worm composting. We're excited for them to start creating worm juice that we can add to our garden.

As for the other supplies, we have plans on when we're going to make the essential oils, seed balls, and kale pesto when our kale crop gets big enough.

Thank you for providing these opportunities for students to learn with hands on projects & to show off their knowledge and experience from home. We really appreciate you.”

  • Needed: Hygiene Products!

    Funded Aug 2, 2023

Thank you so much for this kind donation! As soon as the packages started arriving my students were excited to be able to use the hygiene products. They are the most excited for the chapstick and lint rollers, but have used almost all of the mini tissues already! I'm hoping they will last through the winter!

I do this project at least once a year to make sure I am stocked on important products that help my students feel valued and whole and I am so grateful every time that this project is funded. So thank you for helping humanize my students and being a pivotal part in their educational journey. We really appreciate it.”

  • Love of Reading Week: Part 2!

    Funded Mar 7, 2023

Thank you so much for donating to this project! Coupled with the books that your donation helped to purchase we got books from other community organizations and we put on a Love of Reading event where each person, whether they were an adult, a student, or a younger sibling, left with a free book. It was amazing! We organized each section by genre and students were able to chose books that they identified with and wanted to read. Some of them were even able to take home a box filled to the brim with books! We're excited to do this event again in the future, and we hope you'll consider donating to that project as well!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Bodanyi

My goal with this project is for students to read just for the sake of reading. Too often they're forced to read books that they're not interested in and it turns them off from reading altogether. Which is unfortunate because there are so many amazing books out there, if only students had the opportunity to access them. These books will go into my classroom library for students to check out and read whenever they want. They can take them home, read them at their leisure, and hopefully come back to check out another one! The books I've chosen here are written by and feature BIPOC and LGBTQ+ characters, which are wildly different than the books most of them have been forced to read before. My hope is that by finding books that are more relevant, students will be more likely to continue to search out similar books and want to read on their own once they've left high school.
