  • Microscope Mania

    Funded Feb 11, 2020

Thanks so much for supporting our classroom project and funding the purchase of a new microscope and various microscope slides! Students just finished studying meiosis and seeing the slide with human sperm with the new microscope was very exciting for them! Not only are you helping provide students with equipment for use during labs, you are sending the message that they matter, and that their education matters! This microscope is going to provide many of my science students with quality lab experiences for a long time to come. Thank you again for your continued support, it is very much appreciated!”

  • Zoology Students Harvest Pearls for a Memorable Learning Experience

    Funded Nov 6, 2019

What a great experience for my students to complete a comparative anatomy lab by dissecting both clams and oysters. Students really enjoyed the surprise of the pearl and getting a necklace to create with the pearls they dissected from their clams. We used the new calipers to measure the pearls and dimensions of both the clams and oyster shells. We've also been using them to measure other things around the classroom, including our classroom pet turtles! Thanks so much for providing this fun learning experience for my students and for giving us calipers that can be used for many labs to come!”

  • Science Heats Up with Fermentation Experiments

    Funded Jul 17, 2019

Thanks so much for providing my students with lab materials to show cellular respiration and fermentation with yeast! The lab went so well with the new hot plate being able to keep our mixture at the perfect temperature. Students were able to see the carbon dioxide production by watching the balloons inflate as the yeast broke down sugar. Students also enjoyed using the Breathalyzer to test the alcohol content following yeast fermentation. Students were able to compare the concentration of alcohol produced by the yeast to the legal limit for a DUI in our state. Overall this lesson really allowed students to better understand the process and products of fermentation. Thank you again for making this possible. I will continue to put these supplies to use in other labs as well!”

  • Understanding Osmosis through Experimentation

    Funded Aug 9, 2019

Thank you so much for providing materials to allow me to teach Osmosis to my students. Students learn so much more through demonstrations and experiments when they can see the science as it happens and manipulate variables, rather than just reading about it, taking notes, or watching a video. Students really enjoyed the hands-on lab with elodea leaves and red blood cells. Students were able to use a microscope to view the cells changing size using different types of water. We also demonstrated osmosis and diffusion using the dialysis supplies in the kits! Thank you again for helping provide the materials used during these experiences. Your support is greatly appreciated!”

  • Students with Sore Backs Seek Alternative Seating Options

    Funded Jul 17, 2019

My students love these chairs! I cannot thank you enough for helping me acquire some more balance ball chairs for my students. At open house night many parents commented on how nice it was for students and how they agree it makes a difference in student attention and learning. Students have said so many positive things and have done a great job at sharing the chairs. Thank you again for your continued support of our classroom. I appreciate that others care about my students as much as I do and are interested in seeing them succeed! Your donations are so appreciated! Thank you!”

  • A Turtle-Y Awesome Tank for Zoology Class Pets

    Funded Jul 11, 2019

My students and our classroom pet turtles are just loving the new turtle tank! Students in my Zoology class take care of the turtles each day, making sure they have food, clean water, and the appropriate lighting. Every Monday students measure and weigh the turtles as well as write observations. We are all excited to see how much they grow throughout the year. Thank you so much for helping provide the turtle tank and supplies for my classroom. This is a wonderful learning opportunity for students that allows them to get hands on experience caring for animals.

    Thank you again! Take care.”

  • Pipetting Our Way to a Colorful Science Career

    Funded Apr 17, 2019

Thank you so much for supporting my classroom and providing my students with hands-on lab materials and equipment! We were able to put the kit to use right away for students to practice their micropipetting skills. They had fun creating different color combinations and then trying to pipet the correct amounts in to the circles. This helped prepare them for micropipetting small samples for gel electrophoresis. Students struggled with our smaller pipets so they were very happy when the larger pipets arrived, even though it was after our lab. I am very anxious to use the larger micropipets with students next year. These will be more similar to what is used in career laboratories and give students better control of their samples. Thank you again for donating to this project. My students and I very much appreciate all of your support!”

  • Is That Real Blood?

    Funded Jul 27, 2018

I'm seeing red from all of the blood labs my students are finishing up! My forensic science students have been highly engaged as they learn about blood types, blood spatter, and presumptive blood tests through hands-on lab experiences. The kits and real blood provided through this Donors Choose project went perfectly and students had fun while learning! I think these are learning experiences that students will remember for a long time. Thank you again for supporting our classroom and helping my students feel like real life scientists!”

  • Classroom Basics to Create a Colorful and Organized Science Space

    Funded Dec 18, 2018

We're half way through the school year and supplies are running low. This project was funded at the perfect time! I've already started using the colored paper and laminator to make signs for this week's Forensic Science lab stations and my Biology students started using the colored pencils to complete diagrams to show the process and steps of photosynthesis. Thank you again for donating to our school and supporting my science classroom. Having these materials will help me keep my classroom colorful and organized! Thank you!”

  • Virtual Pig Dissection

    Funded Jul 27, 2018

I am sorry for the delay in posting photos of my students using this program but it took a while for our only technology specialist in the district to install it on our school computers. Now that it is up and running my Forensic Science students were able to explore and learn some anatomy using it. I'm anxious to use it with Zoology and Biology students as well! This does a great job preparing students for hands-on dissections, and in some cases may replace it. Because you helped pay for a school license, our Anatomy and Physiology students will also be able to take advantage of this program! Thank you again for supporting our school. This type of software makes a huge difference in student learning and provides opportunities for students that they may not otherwise receive. Thank you!”

"A mind when stretched by a new idea never regains its original dimensions." I am lucky to work with high school students in grades 9-12. We are a rural, low-income school district surrounded by farmland, which many students live and work on. I teach Biology, Zoology, and Forensic Science to about 115 students per year. I strive to encourage my students and not only teach them to like science but to love learning. I try to present information so that all styles of learners can take something from each lesson. I regularly include video clips, science songs, hands-on projects, technology, and labs into my classes. Working with Donors Choose I hope to bring more hands-on experiences to my students. Your donations make hands-on learning a reality and give my students the experiences they need to prepare them for college and future careers. Thank you for your support!
