The manga here will help many of my students, a large percentage who are reluctant readers, get into the habit of having a book in their hands and reading consistently. Some of them have NEVER experienced the feeling of not being able to put a book down and I think they can definitely experience it with these manga! I've chosen many that focus on character development, plots with a lot of tension and topics that my students are interested in (sports, magic, school bullies). My goal is for my students to discover a love for reading in this more digestible format so that they may feel less intimidated to try reading traditional print books. Many adults already detest reading traditional print, so I don't see why I should force my students to consistently read them when I can get them reading things they enjoy much better. In completing a unit on graphic novels last year, I discovered that I can still identify themes, track characterization, discuss symbols and figurative language, and have meaningful conversations on the stories in comic form. My students had a lot to say and I cannot wait to hear what they have to say this year!
