Give Us Raisin In the Sun, So We Can Shine!
Funded Sep 2, 2021Getting copies of A Raisin in the Sun ensures that all my students in my English 10 Honors 10 classes had a copy to take home and read. While this seems insignificant, it's quite the opposite. After being online for more than a year-- reading and writing and discussing all on the internet-- having a book to hold among peers is a blessing.
In our class, we read excerpts of the play together in class and discuss themes that arise. Because different students are assigned roles from the play as we read aloud, then we can hear and feel the characters come alive. This is a huge difference between listening to the audio or reading independently. Because of your donation, you have been able to support these interactive and beautiful learning experiences for the students. Thank you thank you thank you!”

Funded Mar 4, 2021The books you donated allowed the students who started the club to have a solid foundation for their new revolutionary reading club! The students have been meeting weekly to discuss the topics presented in the book such as racial capitalism and community investment, and they have been growing in their own leadership and community-- all made possible because of your generous donation. You have no idea how much it means to me to be able to share the love of literacy and social justice with these young people. Thank you!!!”

Funded Dec 16, 2020This is the beginning of the pandemic lock-down and having to teach from home, my job had gotten a lot more complicated than before. I had to instantly transform my in-classroom activities into ones that would support my learners in a digital space. This has been tough on me both physically and mentally, but I do what I need to do to keep lessons meaningful and engaging.
With the support of these donations, a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I have been to find resources that fit the thematic units I have already planned. Other teachers have created ready-to-use digital resources that make learning online clear and concretely. Thank you again for the donations! It means so much.”

Funded Dec 1, 2020I've been teaching online since the lockdown began in March and haven't stopped. In this time, I have learned to adapt my teaching style to meet the needs of my students through interactive apps and websites. One thing that both the students and I miss in the English class is taking notes on pen and paper. Your donation has given me the opportunity to model using pen and paper again! I know it sounds so simple, but it's so much more than modeling. It is giving the students an opportunity to connect back to routines we used to have in the classroom.
I received the document reader a week ago, and I have used it every day since! We are writing a final paper, and I was able to model my writing process which includes using diagrams and graphic organizers and annotating lyrics. Thank you SO much for this opportunity to add depth to my lessons.”

Funded Aug 12, 2020I am SO grateful for your donation because I have already improved as an English Langauge Arts teacher with this computer. This purchase was absolutely necessary for the success of distance learning for my over 200 7th, 9th, and 10th graders who are learning how to navigate this new type of learning style. As a teacher who needs to juggle multiple learning platforms and websites at one time, this computer enables me to share my screen with my students and show them high-quality videos and instructions. On Mondays, I am able to record and share video instructions to my students to reference all week. During the week, while I am using the monitor for instruction, I am able to use my laptop for taking roll and updating the presentations in real-time, not able teachers are able to do this. Thank you again for this opportunity to grow in my practice!”

Funded Nov 14, 2017Thank you for all the materials you have given the GEMS! Our Day of Self Care went better than planned: we shared and healed through the power of community and were empowered by all the activities like learning how to use a face-mask and practicing yoga and reading poetry from Rupi Kaur. It was very inspiring for us to see the spirits of our peers be uplifted by spending time with one another and making a space to see be seen and appreciated. We saw a new sense of empowerment and relief from the stress they are currently facing in their daily lives. Thank you for being part of that in a way that may seem so small, but made a huge difference these young women!”

Funded May 7, 2015Your donation provided me with the opportunity to take online courses to deepen my knowledge in Google education products and Excel. I am in the process of completing these classes, but what I have learned so far has impacted my classroom already. Not only am I learning how to use these programs myself, but I am learning how to teach my students with step-by-step easy to follow instructions.
I particularly enjoyed taking these courses because it has connected me with other educators in my discipline. Through the forum discussions, we have shared and collaborated ways we can use these programs in our classroom. For instance, one teacher from Wisconsin recommended logging parent communication with Excel spreadsheets. This is an easy and simple way to keep a thorough log of who and what type of communication has been made.
Thank you again for your generosity! This knowledge has already spread to my classroom because my students are collaborating and sharing work with Google classroom and Google Drive. This has helped decrease the amount of paper being printed on and increased our knowledge of 21st century skills that will help them in college and beyond.”

College and Career Unit Ready!
Funded Apr 29, 2015Thank you so much for your very generous donations! The students were excited to have up-to-date resources to help them research colleges and possible majors. Planning the future is a very daunting task, but with these resources, it made it simpler. The books truly helped boost the students learning because many of them were able to cite from them in their comprehensive research paper, which was ten pages long and required them to compare and contrast five possible colleges they wanted to attend next Fall. I will be able to keep these books for my future classes, so your impact is truly everlasting. Thank you again!”

Funded Dec 17, 2011Thank you so much for your generous donation to my classroom! The theater program at our school is small and still developing. Although we read plays, many of them are copies run from the copy machine. Your donation is the first official sets of plays that our school theater program owns. You have no idea what this means to me.
With these scripts, the students will get to read and analyze one act plays from some of the most famous playwrights, including Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller, providing the students will the most well-rounded theatrical/literary experience. The students will also be able to perform these scenes in front of their peers, developing their public speaking and acting abilities.
At this time of budget cuts and teacher layoffs, your kindness is the most needed. Again, we thank you for your time and donation. ”

Funded Jan 6, 2011With the existence of the Flip Cams in our Drama classes, the level of acting and the appreciation of acting has increased tremendously. We recently used the Flip Cams to film scenes from a play we read, rather than performing it live. The students were skeptical at first, but after trying it, they were impressed by how less "pressured" they felt without a live audience. One student even explained that this would be a great way to, "remember all the cool things we did in Drama." This brings me great joy and immense gratitude.
I know I will continue to use the Flip Cams with the students as a way to guide them through their development as actors. We will film, view, and critique various performances; thanks to your generous donation. Your support of the arts does not go unseen. ”
