My second grade students would tremendously benefit from a set of iPads by creating a pathway and establishing access to technology! Unfortunately, our resources are very limited, particularly in the field of technology. We do not have a set of working computers in our class, limiting their ability to research or demonstrate their writing, reading comprehension, or math skills online. My students could use the iPads for instructional support and engaging activities, all embedded in a myriad of electronic applications (apps)!
They could regularly log onto Reflexmath to enhance essential math fluency skills. One of the major second grade math common core standards is to fluently add and subtract within 20. ReflexMath enables students to monitor their math fact families skills in addition and subtraction, but also in multiplication and division! Students are highly motivated because it is very interactive and game-based! The teacher and parents are easily able to track the students' progress and growth. Additionally, my students will be able to access RAZkids, an online program that allows students to read books on their level and work on reading comprehension skills. This tool will especially help my ESOL or English Language Learners as they would be able to hear audio books on their level, improving their pronunciation and decoding skills! Lastly, my students would implement the iPads during interactive science modules. Instead of just displaying a virtual hermit crab dissection or an online earthquake model to the whole class, groups of students could complete the activities together during a science center. The iPads would promote ownership over their own learning, teamwork, and collaboration among the students!
The possible uses for these iPads in our classroom are endless, limitless, and innumerable!! Students from low-income backgrounds deserve equal access to technology and iPads as students from more affluent homes.
