Help My Students Learn to Spell!
Funded Sep 28, 2009I am writing to thank you wholeheartedly for the spelling dictionaries that you funded for my class. I can honestly say that they have become an indispensable part of our daily classroom life. The kids routinely reach for them in almost every subject, and have gotten MUCH better at looking up words quickly. They also bring the dictionaries home and use them to correct the spelling in their homework. It's clear that having these dictionaries has been a motivator for my kids to use correct spelling as much as possible. They love having the power to correct their spelling themselves, rather than being dependent on a teacher. I am confident that this gift will lead my students toward a lasting habit of using correct spelling in all of their writing. Thank you so much!”

The World Comes to New York City! Atlases for All!
Funded Sep 1, 2009I am writing to thank you for your generous donation of atlases for my 3rd and 4th grade class. We have been using them during the fall, and we expect to use them even more frequently during the spring, as we study the different places that Americans have immigrated from. The students were thrilled to find their family members' home countries and states, from the Dominican Republic, to South Korea, to Utah, to Yemen. Somehow it makes their families' histories more real to them, when they see these places on an official map. They have also become accustomed to reaching for the historical atlases whenever they want to check something about the history of our city.
As the year continues, we will begin learning more about how maps are used and read: from comparing physical to political maps, to learning about scale, latitude, and longitude. I expect that by the end of the year, my students will have a strong grasp of map-reading. Thanks to your generous gift, my students are gaining invaluable knowledge about their own families' histories, as well as the study of geography. Thank you so much!”

Support Young Historians' Study of the African Burial Ground
Funded Mar 31, 2008Thank you, thank you, thank you! I just breathed a huge sigh of relief when I received the email saying that this proposal has been funded. My kids have been studying the African Burial Ground for 2 months now and have interviewed six experts in person, as well as visiting the site and reading articles about it. They are getting ready to write their own book about the Burial Ground and having their own copy of Breaking Ground, Breaking Silence will be a TREMENDOUS help. They'll use it to check information, look at photographs, and think of ways to organize their own book. They frequently pick up our one classroom copy and I know that they will be absolutely thrilled to have their own individual copies. Thank you so much for contributing to my students' work as historians”

Help My Students Learn To Spell!
Funded Dec 14, 2007I am so happy and relieved that my students will be receiving these spelling dictionaries. We've been working on spelling all year using cumbersome and inadequate dictionaries, and the students really need these new, portable dictionaries that they'll be able to use at school and at home. I know that they will be delighted to receive their own personal dictionary, and that they will use them every day to find and remember words they need. Thank you so much! Your donation is truly appreciated”

Help My Students Discover the Age of Exploration
Funded Sep 20, 2007I'm thrilled that you've funded my proposal for books on the Age of Exploration. As soon as they arrive, we'll begin using them in our reading curriculum to introduce both the content and the skills of non-fiction reading. Having these books will make our study of the Age of Exploration much richer, as well as easier for me to plan and manage. Thanks again”

Help My Students Learn to Spell!
Funded Nov 11, 2005Thank you so much for funding spelling dictionaries for my class! I am so relieved that they will have this vital resource available to them soon. We have been working hard on spelling this year, and as always, my third- and fourth-graders are determined to spell correctly, but they don't always know how. These dictionaries will be a huge help as they learn to find correct spellings independently. Again, thank you so much for helping us obtain this important tool for learning”

Maps and Globe for 3rd and 4th Graders
Funded Jun 22, 2005Thank you so much for funding my proposal for maps and a globe for my students! These materials will be so important as we study the explorers, the 13 colonies, and the American Revolution next school year. We will also use them frequently to understand current events. In the past I have often found it difficult to make clear to students exactly where different places are located, and your gift will make this so much easier. Thanks again for your generosity”

Binoculars, Magnifying Glasses, and Field Guides--Supplies for Young Naturalists
Funded May 2, 2005Thank you so much for funding this proposal! Now that the weather is getting nice, we are really excited to get outside for science. The kids have been learning about birds, mammals, insects, and other natural creatures all year. It will be great to go to our local park, identify species, and see how the different organisms work. Having the field guides, binoculars, and magnifying glasses will enable to do this in a much more in-depth way. This project will be a wonderful culminating activity for our class. Thanks again”

Bird Watch in Prospect Park
Funded Dec 7, 2004Thank you so much for funding our trip to the Prospect Park Audubon Center! Although we are going to have to put our trip off until late spring (because of calendar conflicts) we are really looking forward to it. The kids are really enthusiastic about learning about birds, and they love to notice field marks that help them identify individual species. Visiting Prospect Park with an expert guide and binoculars will give them a great opportunity to put this skill to work on birds that are not pigeons! Thanks again”

Current Events Magazine for 3rd and 4th Graders
Funded Nov 22, 2004Thank you so much for funding this proposal! I have been fortunate in finding other funding for Weekly Reader, so I am eager to use your donation to supply my children with another excellent magazine, National Geographic Explorer. We will use it to improve non-fiction reading skills and content knowledge. I hope that you will find this an acceptable substitution; because I know that the children will learn a lot from National Geographic Explorer and will really benefit from your generosity. Thank you again”
