  • Excellent Eighth Grade Education and Extracurriculars

    Funded Sep 23, 2024

Thank you for your donation to my science and math classroom! We have been able to do several hands on activities already this school year, and the students are loving it. They have been talking about the experiments with other adults in the building and asking for when we will be able to do more experiments. Thanks to you, we have more for after winter break!

Their math skills are on fire. The support materials provide the needed practice and remediation to help with gap skills.

The other materials are for the 8th grade Move Up ceremony in June, which is something we already started planning for. These materials are part of each student's and their families core memories of milestone success. Thank you for making that happen.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Fisher

  • Animal-azing science!

    Funded Dec 30, 2022

We had a really immersive and valuable experience dissecting crayfish. In addition to learning about the native crayfish species and how they function and adapt to their environment, we got to have a quality science investigation. Students experienced what it is like for scientists to investigate and analyze their subjects. Some of the best moments were when students identified parts of the anatomy and how it functions to help the crayfish survive. After weeks of preparation and learning, students were so excited to dissect. The couple of students who chose not to physically dissect were still involved, helpful, and interactive. We are so thankful that the kits came with other animals in addition to the crayfish. Now we have some exciting investigations to look forward to for after the state testing concludes. This was truly an experience my students hoped for. They were highlighted in the schools weekly newsletter. We have endless thank you's for your generosity.”

  • TIME for Kids and Scholastic MATH Classroom Magazines!

    Funded Sep 25, 2015

Thank you so very much for helping my classroom obtain Time for Kids and Scholastic Math Reading Materials! These materials bring current events into our classroom at an appropriate reading and interest level. TFK and SM are designed for classroom use. TFK focuses on ELA skills like main idea, summarizing, and providing evidence. It also encourages higher level thinking by asking critical questions about the articles. SM provides interesting articles demonstrating how math is involved in many real-world activities that appeal to middle school interests. One example was an article about all of the math involved in snowboarding!

In the classroom, we use these materials for small group reading and discussions, as well as independent homework assignments. Each issue provides so much material that it can be used for both. Students are eager to volunteer to read, and the discussions get lively. It encourages students to share their thoughts as well as add in any prior information that they have on the subject. Students then have to question and defend their own ideas.

A great majority of the students enjoy these materials. Their full engagement in discussions show their interest. Some students can be found reading the articles in other classes as well. Its most rewarding when students research something further because it caught their interest or something they can connect to. I have been using TFK for four years now, and it continues to prove to be a valuable resource. This is the first year using Scholastic Math, and I hope to be able to use it in the future!”

  • Super Sonic Social Studies

    Funded Aug 4, 2014

The Super Sonic Social Studies items have been a big hit so far! Especially the Junior Scholastic magazines, which came right on time! The first JS we received included over 6 articles that my students could connect to and analyze. There was high interest when we practiced our current events assignment together on the third day of school. I received almost 100% Homework from the students, who had to read another article on their own, summarize it, and reflect on it, including questions, connections, and opinions. I am already excited to know that the Junior Scholastic was a great choice for my middle school students. Its written at their level, in their language, and about topics they are interested in. Thank you so much for helping me start off this year on the best foot possible. I foresee a lot of great conversations about important topics, and its all because of you! Thank you so much for your donations!”

  • "Projecting" Our Future

    Funded Sep 29, 2013

When we received the projector, the kids were so excited. My students were very much involved in the entire process. They inquired about the price, they needed updates on donations, and they became very impatient when it was being shipped. It was a race to install it - and our wonderful Tech teacher Mr. G set up for us in a jiffy. They inundated me with questions because they were so anxious.

We use the projector daily, for anything from warm-ups to video clips to power points. Most recently, we viewed a PowerPoint on WWII. Being able to view photographs together allowed for discussion. One student in particular who struggles with academics was able to show off his military intelligence. This excited other students and sparked a teachable moment about racism. And it is the time of year for standardized test prep. With access to test materials on the projector, the students can discuss together what makes responses proficient and advanced.

What excites me most is the ability to access media for my lesson and bring it directly to my students. The projector is such an integral part of our daily studies, and we took advantage of it until we didn't have it. We are all aware of how important technology is in our lives today. I've noticed an awareness in the students as they view the media I present, as they create their own products digitally. And I know I speak for all of m students as well as myself when I say thank you to our donors!”

  • Touching Spirit Bear Novel Study

    Funded Sep 17, 2012

It took us a while, but we did it! We had to pause mid-novel study for our state assessments, but as soon as the test was completed, my 8th graders were excited to continue reading and working with the text. "Touching Spirit Bear" is about a teenager who chooses Native American Circle Justice over a juvenile detention center. In class, we held our own version of Circle Justice. It gave the students an opportunity to experience this tradition and voice their thoughts and feelings about each other in a healthy way. I was also impressed and pleased with their eagerness to read and discuss the novel as we went along. At this time, the students are completing a choice board project on the novel. It offers them various activities that draw from the various multiple intelligences, and the students can choose the assignments that they prefer in order to display their deeper understanding. Every day they come into class and diligently get to work. They are asking questions and giving their best efforts. It is so rewarding to see my students working with literature. Thank you so much for making this possible!”

My students have faced struggles in life and have not been offered education at the high standards many are used to. With a new faculty, extended day and year, my students will be exposed to new things this year. They are wary of the entirely new faculty, procedures, and way of learning. But I know they will soon welcome and appreciate learning and continue to grow and expand their horizons. They are bright young ladies and gentlemen with a lot of potential and will be successful with the proper support and guidance.
