  • Math Routines to Build Numerical Confidence

    Funded Nov 10, 2021

Thank you so much for your support of our project! Math routines are a fundamental part of our approach to teaching math. Students engage in a variety of counting activities to develop number sense and place value understanding.

These collections of items will allow students to choose from a variety of objects to count. They will also allow counting up to high numbers and grouping using different strategies. Students record their thinking and take turns sharing their ideas to build presenting skills.

English language learners and struggling mathematicians are able to participate in these routines and build language skill and positive math identities. Having access to items like those provided in this project will promote a love of math, numbers, counting and collaboration.”

  • Art Kits to Promote Creativity and Self-Expression

    Funded Nov 10, 2021

Thank you so much for your generosity and support of this project. My artists were absolutely thrilled to learn that this project has been fully funded. They have been asking every day when the materials will arrive and are ecstatic to now have them in their possession.

Access to high-quality materials at home will develop a love of art and expression. Many of my fifth graders do not have art materials at home. They cannot wait to take these supplies home and get to work on them. This is especially helpful as students prepare for our upcoming 3-week break.

We are extremely grateful to you for your support of this project and seeing the value of connecting young artists with supplies like these.”

  • Building a Powerful Non-Fiction Library

    Funded Oct 21, 2021

Thank you so much for your generous support of our classroom. Your contributions have helped us add much-needed non-fiction books to our classroom library, which will be wonderful resources as we prepare to launch our units on non-fiction reading skills.

As students build critical literacy skills and navigate identifying author's purpose and craft moves, having access to high-interest books engages learners and increases participation. In order to prepare our fifth graders for navigating abundant information as critical readers, these resources will provide them with opportunities to practice these important life skills.

Thank you for recognizing the importance of connecting readers with high-quality resources and your support of our classroom. We are excited and grateful!”

  • Books, Books, and More Books

    Funded Sep 16, 2021

Thank you so much for your extraordinary generosity in support of my fifth grade class. My students are so excited to begin reading the newest non-fiction additions to our classroom library.

Your donations enabled us to add high-interest non-fiction texts to our collection. These books will be central to our work as we engage in non-fiction literacy skills from identifying main ideas to more sophisticated work identifying author craft moves and point of view. One of the most important aspects to this work is allowing students access to books that are interesting to them in order to effectively navigate this work.

Each year students represent different interests, experiences and talents. Having high-quality books that reflect the individuals in our classroom increases participation and willingness to take risks as readers.

Thank you again for choosing to support our 5th grade classroom.”

  • Follow the Digital Road: Literacy Professional Development Opportunity

    Funded Jun 14, 2021

Thank you so much for the opportunity to participate in this amazing professional development experience. As I enter my 9th year as a classroom teacher, I still remain committed to improving my teaching practice to benefit my students.

Teachers College Reading and Writing Project Institute was an opportunity for me to connect with like-minded educators and explore best practices in reading instruction targeting 5th graders. This was a chance to explore new resources and form new connections. I was able to be challenged and collaborate with educators across the country and around the world.

Thank you for your donations in support of my continued professional growth. I am excited to share what I have learned with the teachers I work alongside, families and learners this school year and beyond.”

  • Back to School (in Person) in April

    Funded May 27, 2021

Thank you so much for the generous contributions in support of this project. The classroom supplies you helped us acquire will help ensure that all learners are prepared for learning as they return to the physical classroom environment.

The pandemic has changed the way school looks and feels. One big change is going from communal, shared materials to individual everything. Supplies that were once shared by all members of our community, now needed to be sterilized and distributed individually. With so much uncertainty, this project allowed us to have ample supplies to provide each learner with their own brand-new materials. This ensured that students were all prepared for their first days back to school with everything they would need to engage in learning and complete tasks.

Thank you for supporting my fifth graders and facilitating a smooth transition back to in-person learning!”

  • Artistic Exploration During Distance Learning

    Funded Dec 7, 2020

Thank you for your very generous donations to support of this project. Artistic Exploration During Distance Learning helped connect students with art materials, including paints and a multi-purpose sketch pad, to engage in hands-on learning experience at home.

Art in school provides a way for students to engage in self-expression and begin to process the complexities of the past year. The art kits, funded through this project, ensured at all learners have access to high-quality art supplies at home to foster creativity and choice.

Students have utilized these materials in our current unit in art on social action projects. Students had the choice to select a social issue that matters to them and explored various ways of addressing it through art. We are immensely grateful for your contributions that helped make all of this possible.”

  • Connecting 5th Graders With High-Quality Non-Fiction Digital Resources

    Funded Oct 9, 2020

Thank you so much for your incredibly generous contributions in support of our classroom.

TrueFlix is a phenomenal resource. It provides us with opportunities to engage with history and science based non-fiction texts. This is particularly valuable during stay at home learning because students do not have access to our classroom or school libraries, both of which are designed to match student reading level.

In addition, TrueFlix will provide us with materials to build a history research unit that ties reading and writing together. Students will be able to practice note-taking and conversations around a shared text as they prepare to write reports. In addition, there are resources including vocabulary builders and video segments to engage my English Language Learners and students who need extra visual supports.

During challenging times like these your decision to support a 5th grade classroom at a Title 1 school is more meaningful than ever.”

  • An Introduction to Critical Literacy and Trustworthy Journalism

    Funded Sep 5, 2020

Thank you for your incredible contribution in support of this project. Our subscription to Time for Kids engages us in critical thinking as we read non-fiction texts. The value of these experiences is proving to be more and more important each day.

Time for Kids supports us as we dig into English Language Arts skills and strategies from determining main ideas to identifying author's purpose. In addition, we are able to analyze craft moves that are intended to influence the reader.

Time for Kids provides high-interest articles and is proving to be a great resource for all readers from avid readers to reluctant ones. Supports are also available to make these articles accessible to English Language Learners and students who benefit from visual and video supports.

During a time when media literacy skills are imperative to becoming a well-informed member of society, projects like this one have proven invaluable. Thank you for your generosity.”

  • An Incredible Virtual Trip to a Truly Gentle Barn

    Funded Aug 18, 2020

Thank you so much for providing my class with the opportunity to connect with the Gentle Barn virtually. We had our field trip today and, though we weren't able to go in person, we were able to have a virtual tour of the Gentle Barn and meet all of the animals that live in this amazing animal sanctuary. From cows to horses to sheep and pigs, we learned the stories about these animals and how they came to live at the Gentle Barn. Our class favorite was a female turkey who we learned loves to cuddle. As we spoke with our host, the turkey made some happy noises and fell asleep on her lap.

This year has been challenging for all of us, and this experience created a space for my class to build empathy and feel empowered to make a difference. Conversations about the treatment of animals and even our planet stemmed from this experience.

We are so grateful for your generosity and for this wonderful opportunity.”
