The Peace Room is the hub of restorative practices and Black Student Union at our school. This space is used to hold restorative conversations, proactively address conflict before escalating to a violent altercation, and problem solve around issues that may disrupt daily learning. As Black children, our students deserve a space where they can unapologetically be themselves and that is what the Peace Room is designed for. Working with students that have experienced significant trauma, having an outlet for them to get their frustrations or negative energy out can be extremely beneficial during the school day. I firmly believe that some of our students when escalated could benefit from using the punching bag as an alternative to getting in physical altercations. The beanbag chairs will replace our couch (pictured) that was recently broken as a comfortable alternative to traditional seating. Adding these seats to the space will be great for holding circles, collaborating on group work, and when participating in mindfulness exercises. Contributing to the Peace Room will aid in creating a comfortable environment for students to express all emotions and develop the emotional intelligence they need to thrive in school, their careers, and personal life.
