  • Snacks for Stellar Students

    Funded Sep 11, 2018

Having healthy and nutritious snacks at the Wellness Center helps us meet our students' needs. Most of our students come from low-income families. They often come to school on an empty stomach which can lead to irritability, lack of energy, or stomach aches. When students find out they can get a snack here, their face lights up and they feel supported. Wellness staff steps into the hallway during passing periods to offer water, hand sanitizer, lotion, sanitary napkins, and snacks. We greet each student with a smile and some encouraging words. Thank you again for your generous donation and for allowing us to feed our striving students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Mika

  • Planning for Our Future

    Funded Sep 7, 2018

Thank you for your support and commitment to helping students succeed! All of the materials have been delivered and the students will be receiving them by next week. A student planner is a planner given to students in order to create an organized schedule and improve communication. With these planners being a part of the classroom experience, students are more likely to keep track of their assignments, set personal goals, and enhance communication between teachers, students, and parents. We appreciate your generous donations and kind words!”

  • Snacks for Striving Students

    Funded Apr 28, 2018

As our school year begins, the materials and supplies you have helped me obtain are about to be put to use. High school students and their growing bodies are always in constant need.

Many students weren't able to focus on their classwork last year and often came to me seeking food, water, and tea. I have also seen many students eating Hot Cheetos and junk food because they can not afford or have access to nutritious meals and snacks. I am so excited to talk about healthy eating habits, lifestyle choices, and how it all it relates to their education.

Thank you again for all your support.”

  • Where There Is Tea There Is Hope

    Funded Jun 25, 2018

Thank you for your support and generous donations. Students love the different tea flavors such as peppermint, chamomile, and orange. The peppermint tea is used for students with stomach aches and the chamomile is used for students who are feeling anxious or worried about violence in the community or a big test. Your donations made us feel supported and remembered.

We love the DonorsChoose website because it's a helpful resource that creates a sense of community and provides students with the supplies they need.”

  • Tampons For Talented Teens

    Funded Jun 17, 2018

Studies have shown that proper hygiene improves a student's comfort and confidence levels which, in turn, will lead to improved attendance as well as academic success. Thank you so much for supporting our students and allowing them to feel clean and comfortable in class and on the field. The Wellness Initiative is the only school-based program for adolescent health and wellness of its kind. The Initiative is made possible through a unique partnership between the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth and Their Families (DCYF), the San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH) and the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD). By leveraging the resources of each agency, student health is addressed from a citywide perspective.

Thank you for keeping students and teachers in your heart and in your mind. You are greatly appreciated!”

  • Tampons for Teens

    Funded Apr 16, 2018

When the tampons arrive they will be placed in our gender neutral bathroom located in the Wellness Center bathroom for students to use. Tampons can be helpful for student-athletes as well as those who tend to have heavy periods. Tampons offer the benefit of invisible protection and help keep periods private. Having tampons with plastic applicators can allow students to feel more comfortable trying tampons for the first time. Thank you for your generosity and kind words. Young women should feel confident, clean, and ready to take on the day at school no matter what time of the month it is! We appreciate you all so much.”

  • Warm Clothes for Wonderful Students

    Funded Mar 5, 2018

Thank you for helping our students feel confident, clean, and cool. It truly is the little things that matter and you have no idea how much your donations mean to our students. Having pants to work out in that don't have stains, holes, or tears allows students to play wholeheartedly. San Francisco weather is so unpredictable students sometimes have to walk to school in the rain and then go into a classroom wet and unprepared to learn. Having new socks and pants can make a huge difference and allows students to stay focused on learning as opposed to their clothes.”

  • Snacks for Striving Students

    Funded Feb 20, 2018

Healthy eating helps build a foundation for a lifetime of smart choices. Fruits, veggies, and whole grain products make good snacks. Sending a healthy, accessible snack along with a student lessens the likelihood a student will turn to vending machines if they're available. Students need snacks to maintain energy levels throughout the day, but school snacking becomes less beneficial when junk food competes against healthy food for students attention.

Students might have sports, a job, an ever-expanding social calendar, money to spend, and car keys. With this much independence, we can't police what students eat, but we can encourage healthy snacking by keeping nutritious snacks in the Wellness Center. Thank you for helping us fuel our striving students :)”

  • Stress Reduction for Striving Students

    Funded Dec 15, 2017

Thank you so much for your generous donations and your kind words. Our students overcome barriers every day and strive to bring their best selves to into the classrooms. We encourage our students to take breaks when they are feeling stressed, worried, anxious, or overwhelmed. They love the thera-putty because they can squeeze and mold it into shapes. Teaching students about self-care and stress reduction will benefit them for years to come. I hope you all are having a great week. Burton High School loves our donors and we appreciate you!”

  • Chop Chop, We Need Cough Drops!

    Funded Jan 16, 2018

You would not believe how fast the cold and flu spread in a school setting! I am so happy we have these supplies on hand. Students are able to stop by the Wellness Center during passing period to grab an Emergen-C, water, and hand sanitizer. We also remind students to wash their hands frequently to avoid spreading germs. A cough drop comes in handy because having a cough can be distracting and impede on learning. Please take care of yourself and stay hydrated. Thank you again for your generous and thoughtful donations.”
