In my Math classroom, manipulative are used almost daily! We use place value mats and disks to model not only place value standards, but also skills like addition and subtraction, regrouping when needed. We have pattern blocks for our geometry standards and fraction circles for when we study fractions. The Lego bricks are a perfect way to model problems involving area and perimeter. The concrete use of manipulatives, such as Legos, helps to bring abstract concepts into clearer focus. The hands on approach works so well in 4th grade! I would love to see them have the opportunity to understand area and perimeter better by using a manipulative such as Lego bricks.
