  • Spooky Book Lovers' Dream Library

    Funded Jan 9, 2025

You have helped fund the new most popular section in our library! On behalf of my seventh grade students, I want to extend a huge THANK YOU for your generous donations. Your support has allowed us to fill our classroom with the horror and mystery books my students love, and their excitement is truly inspiring!

Thanks to you, my students can immerse themselves in thrilling stories that spark their imaginations and keep them eagerly turning the pages. We have began tracking our independent reading time, with the goal of reaching over 30 minutes of self-selected, uninterrupted reading time. Seeing their enthusiasm for reading grow is an incredible gift, and we are so grateful for your kindness.

Thank you for making a difference in our classroom and in the lives of young reader”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Landaverde

  • Weekend Warriors Need Supplies!

    Funded Mar 24, 2025

This is such great news! My Saturday School students are going to be so excited and motivated when they get these treats. They put in so much work 6 days a week and these snacks will help recharge them when they need it. And the supplies will keep them engaged in every lesson. We’re so grateful for your generosity. You put smiles on so many faces!”

    With gratitude,

  • We're Reading in English!

    Funded Oct 3, 2024

When the new books arrived, our entire class was so excited! The ENL students had been reading lower grade level books, more like picture books, during independent reading and book clubs, so once they saw that their books resembled everyone else's, they felt very proud. We displayed them on a bookshelf for them to be able to access whenever they wanted.

Since we have been implementing more independent reading into our work schedules, the books have been used almost daily. I began by introducing them to the new texts, giving them the blurbs and allowing them time to browse. A small group wanted to read the same book, so I got them started on a book reading club where they could take turns reading and then discussing the events in the book by answering response prompts they were given to guide their conversations. Others chose to read independently and used their translation dictionaries when they needed them.

Since all of our ELA assessments are online (weekly and unit), they are able to grab their independent book to read when they need a brief break during testing or when they have finished their test. It really keeps them engaged and helps them when they are feeling too overwhelmed with their grade-level curriculum work.

We are about to start a short story writing unit next week, and I know these books will help our ENL scholars understand the idea of a story arc and the elements that make up a story. They'll be able to transfer their knowledge of stories to their own writing. Thank you so much again for your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Landaverde

  • Engaging Spanish Speaking Scholars in Learning!

    Funded Oct 19, 2023

When the dictionaries and the earbuds arrived, everyone was so excited! The ENL students had been working on phonics programs without headsets, so they were finally able to listen intently during online instruction.

Since we do a great amount of vocabulary acquisition in our lessons, the dictionaries and thesauruses were immediately put to use for our ENL scholars and our English speaking scholars. We had to teach them how to use them, but once they learned, they were able to independently use them during instruction. They have been so useful, and I know they will continue to be.

When we return from the holiday break, the scholars will be completing a middle of the year online assessment. The earbuds are going to be extremely helpful for our ENL scholars. Thank you so much again for your generosity!”

  • Teens Journaling for Personal Growth

    Funded Sep 22, 2023

I was so happy when this project was delivered. I could not wait for my students to see the new resources! I displayed the journals, the coloring pencils, and the felt-tip pens on a table in our classroom, and then I told the students how they will each be getting a journal to decorate and write in. They were beyond excited!

They spent so much time making their journals their own. And then, when it was time to begin writing, I put a writing prompt on the board as an option, and then had them all start writing. We have used these journals for writing during Restorative Circles, which we hold each Friday for 45 minutes. We also encourage them to free write after their weekly exams. Journaling not only builds their handwriting stamina in a world of computer based writing, it also allows them to express their thoughts and emotions in a way that most of them are not used to.

Going further, we will be writing to explore our thoughts and opinions connected to current events, cultural months, and personal issues that may arise in our classroom. We are incredibly grateful for your contribution to our learning and growing.”

    With gratitude,

  • Empowering Teens Through Current Events Magazines

    Funded Aug 28, 2020

This project helped my students to expand their knowledge of the world during a very difficult time in society. While I had less than six students in my classroom for each of my classes, I was also teaching the majority of the classes virtually from my classroom. The resources helped tremendously!

The printed magazines were extremely engaging to my in-person scholars. They worked independently and collaboratively, reading the articles, analyzing the ideas behind each of them, and then discussing them together at length. With the addition of the digital copies, my remote students were able to do exactly the same work but in a virtual setting.

With the wide-range of topics in the magazines, every scholar's interest was met. I really appreciate you helping to fund this project. Your generosity reached many inspirational minds!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Landaverde
