  • Second Graders Need to Read!

    Funded Oct 21, 2019

I have been moved from 4th grade to 2nd grade and all of my books are at the upper elementary level. Most of my students in second grade are not reading on grade level yet, so I definitely needed to change my classroom library. This project has helped me to build a classroom library that is on level with my students' needs and is helping to build a community of stronger readers. Many of the students do not have books at home to read and our classroom library will allow them to read each night, as required by our school.

Because my students are reading more frequently, they are getting exposure to more words. They are increasing their phonics skills and working on improving fluency and comprehension.

As mentioned above, many of them do not have books at home to read. Many of the students come from low income homes with parents that don't speak English and they have told me that they are happy to have books in the classroom library to choose from.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Flacco

  • Classroom Supplies for Hurricane Maria Relief!

    Funded Feb 20, 2018

Thank you so much for your support!

Last year our school focused on close reading and my students used highlighters and colored pencils to mark the texts we read and take notes. We are teaching them to make a deeper connection with the passages. The white boards and markers are used daily for math...working out problems and showing their answers. The students are more excited about using white boards than boring old fashioned paper.

Our school is a Title 1 school located in a low-income/high poverty area. My students were excited to get new materials to use for learning. I was surprised to see how well they took care of their "tools" and at the end of the year I let them take everything home with them. They worked really hard and deserve this small gift.

The students are now in fifth grade and seem to be doing very well. I miss having them in my class, but I get to see them in passing and at lunch. I know they are continuing to use the organization strategies that I taught them last year while using these supplies.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Flacco

My students need some of the basic tools to get the job done. These items will be used in our daily lessons to help keep students more engaged. They have group bins that will keep the highlighters, markers, glue, and pencils organized. Giving low-income students access to instruments that other students may take for granted is a minor investment in their future. This year we are focusing on close reading and my students will use highlighters and post it notes to annotate the texts we read. The white boards and markers will be used for math…working out problems and showing their answers. The divider tabs will be used in their binders to keep their graded work organized so that they can share it with their parents.
