I teach Students in grades 9-12 at in a diverse and exciting classroom. Students in my class are excited to explore the world of engineering as a possible career field in the future. My students are inventive and creative in solving real world problems and are hungry to learn new things. My students enjoy the use of math and science in practical activities creating things that improve everyday life. My students look forward to moving on from high school continue their education in a college or vocational/trade training program, many of them looking toward the military to pay for their college. I serve as a Technology and Engineering education teacher, teaching Automotive Maintenance and Engineering. As careers in the STEM fields increase in Connecticut and nationally, East Hartford High School must do a better job building students’ math and science proficiency, while also cultivating students’ interests and passions in the STEM areas, especially in applied areas focusing in college and career readiness. Over the last few years, we have had struggles with sparking interest in today’s students. I am requesting help in obtaining supplies and equipment build our own vehicle, in this case bearings that will withhold a greater amount of force. I hypothesize that if we engage students in activities that utilize real world skills that help with college and career readiness, then we will develop students’ skills and interests in a fun and interactive format. My advanced class numbers have already more than doubled, and my introduction classes are full. Students will meet after school three days a week to work on our vehicles in addition some class time. Students will also develop valuable interdisciplinary skills around teamwork, communication, project management, and perseverance.
