Children learn best through play - this has been proven time and again! Why not incorporate one of the best places on earth into a thematic unit - THE ZOO! All children, those with and without special needs will become enraptured with this theme and involved in learning adventures together!
With these materials, STEM-based dramatic play centers will be created for the preschool children to pretend they are zoo keepers, veterinarians, and zoo shop keepers!
The children will use the Wild Animal LEGO Zoo set and the Toy Zoo Kingdom Building set to practice building animal habitats, and documenting what they have made, how they did it and the materials they used - incorporating pre-writing skills, STEM, language-based activity, and fine motor skills. They'll be so busy having fun - they won't realize how much they're learning!
The Nature Up Close light slides, Animal Vocabulary Development Photo Card Library and Animals Science Viewer will be used to teach vocabulary that matches our theme, and the Animal Adventure Play carpet will help to designate a space, and give the students more opportunities to use the materials - placing the animal toys in the correct habitat!
For the youngest students, and students who are developmentally not ready for all of the more complicated dramatic play, I have asked for the Wooden Safari Shape Sorter, Melissa and Doug Animal Shape Sorting Truck, Baby Zoo soft Alphabet Cards, Animal hand and finger puppets, and magnets in order to provide the youngest students in the room the opportunity to join in the animal fun and work on skills within their targeted range in a way that still incorporates the overall Zoo theme! We would hate to leave any of our important early learners out!
