My 20 kindergarten students spend at least 50% of the day sitting on the floor participating in academic learning opportunities. In a typical day we spend time reading stories, practicing phonics skills, counting, singing, adding, subtracting, and participating in number talks. This does not cover all of the things we do but just a few. During this time they need a clearly defined space of their own. This will allow them to focus on learning and not on their neighbors. Currently, they struggle to maintain focus on learning activities as their personal space bubbles are constantly being popped. With this beautiful rug, students will have a clearly defined space which will allow them to be responsible, respectful and ready to learn. Having a space to call their own will help them to take ownership of their learning, and will allow them to implement whole body listening strategies that we teach at our school - eyes watching, ears listening, voice quiet and body still.
