Character and Multicultural Education Through Art!
Funded Aug 24, 2011I can't tell you what a pleasure it was seeing my students sharing their culture with each other. They were able to make connections with literature and art. Now their creative ideas can grow and blossom in ways that would not had we not had the supplies that ensured my students were not limited in what they could dream. With schools budgets being cut and soon facing larger cuts it would not have been possible to purchase these supplies for my students.
We read a story about the Day of the Dead, which is a traditional Mexican celebration of life and remembrance. Though a part of their culture, most of my students had not experienced this celebration, nor understood the meaning behind it. After reading the story my students embarked on a series of art activities, which demonstrated many of the beautiful traditions of this holiday. They were able to create masks in the shape of skulls and decorate them in accordance with the colorful traditions of Día de los Muertos.
Students also created a special paper banner called papel picado, which historically is a Mexican art form. Traditionally it is created with tissue paper, however my students used construction paper, which was easier to handle. With this activity they were able to explore symmetry, an important math concept. Another important activity that the students really enjoyed was creating a paper flower in memory of someone important to them who had passed. These flowers are symbolic and the children loved taking the time to honor a family member.
What was most beautiful about this day was that the children were able to share their culture with the whole school because classes walked passed our bulletin board and even wrote comments about their favorite part. It is so important for my students to have an opportunity to be proud of their culture as well as to have a forum to do so. This would not be possible without your kind and generous donation. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for given us the gift of knowledge and expression.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Ana.
