A typical day in the speech room is a little different than a general education classroom, in that I work with children in small groups (3-4 kids) and all my students have special needs. Some have difficulty expressing themselves verbally; others have difficulty understanding spoken or written language. These difficulties can often trigger behavioral problems and frustration. In speech, I teach strategies for learning correct language use and understanding. For students who have articulation problems, I help them learn correct tongue, lip, or jaw placement in order to produce clear speech. I see a range of ages, from preschool up through fifth grade. We have a lot of fun in speech as I create a lot of my own materials and we play a lot of games to keep students interested in the therapy activities in which they are participating (i.e., repeating sounds over and over). Our school has an atmosphere of acceptance and family. It is a wonderful place to learn!
