The majority of our reading instruction is done through novel studies and a class set of this book would be used for just that: reading and analyzing a text together. The events of this story are historically relevant to our society and culturally relevant to our students. Multiple copies of a high-quality text allow us to dive deep into the story’s elements to analyze the author's purpose and make powerful connections to our own lives. This novel is part historical fiction, part problem-solving, and part mystery with messages about identity and society. A story is written from the perspective of two young kids solving a puzzle, this novel gives a voice to our students who can see themselves reflected in the main characters and builds a connection between the historical events during the Jim Crow South and the current events happening today. This will be an incredibly valuable tool as we work toward a goal of creating scholars who think critically, seek understanding, and above all, stand for justice.
