My three English 3 classes will be coming together to attend the movie The Sun is Also a Star in theaters the second to last week of this school year. This will be the second movie we have attended this school year, and the first one still stands as one of the best community building and inspiring field trips of the year. Students often talk about what the experience meant for them, and the learning was clear in the work they did after returning from the movie. This will help honor the hard work students will have put in all quarter to finish this book and is also a chance to honor the community building we have worked hard on all year. These students are focused, curious, and put in their best effort each day as we attempt to finish novels in such a short time period. As we read, we will also explore the serious topics discussed throughout this novel, including immigration, deportation, hopelessness, and freedom. They will participate in rich discussions connecting it to their own experiences and beliefs and consider what it would be like to be in the main character's position. As we read this novel, I hope to help encourage students to keep up the incredible work and discussions, and to finish this book (and year) off strong. Knowing that we will be attending this movie will be a key piece to sustaining their interest and motivation. After seeing the movie, the students will compare the novel to the movie adaptation, and explore how the movie does or does not accurately represent the themes and author's choices that we have identified throughout our reading. These students are building their reader identities and their individual perspectives while honoring their work as a community.
