The plethora of sensory toys, calming activities, comfortable and flexible seating will aid in creating a space that will help to calm, focus, and energize my students while centering interventions on being proactive learners and replacing problematic behaviors.
All students have the desire to be successful in the classroom, it is up to us to provide them with a setting where they can be!
My absolutely amazing students - who struggle with additional social and emotional needs than most - need to be supported by an environment where they feel safe, and comfortable. Providing my kiddos with a space where they feel supported, confident, and calm allows us to open up, and focus on their future success - both in and out of the classroom.
Legos, magna-tiles, and tinker toys give our kids the opportunity for role-play - inviting them to work together to solve problems and to express and phrase themselves in relation to others, building self-confidence and increasing awareness of the feelings of others. An iPad for our classroom would aid in the implementation of social emotional learning - with so many things vying for our (and our students') attention, technology is a way to incorporate short, paperless character education based discussions into a classroom routine. Marble Run and Crocodile Creek puzzles encourage teamwork and cooperative play. Beanless bag chairs and other flexible seating options give our kiddos a sense of ownership and enable them to become invested in their own classroom space - and often times address sensory needs!
My students are resilient and determined - without a doubt, they will overcome their individual obstacles regardless of the space they are in during school hours, but giving them the space they deserve to grow and learn will help them reach their social, emotional and academic goals.
