I aim to make a space in my classroom where my students can problem-solve in a less restricted environment. Each day, students are told exactly how to go about solving equations and answering questions. They need a space where they can engage with materials and utilize the problem-solving skills that they so desperately need to grow.
Our classroom will be a community of masterpieces.
Just as in life, our classroom masterpieces will not all be the same. By giving the students a space with a variety of tools and materials, students will be able to work with materials that they may not have previously been able to before.
Magnetic Builders, K'Nex, Brain Flakes, Marble Tracks, and blocks will allow students to use their engineering powers to create, not only from blueprints, but from their own imaginations. Gears and Dominoes will allow students to further pursue their understanding about the ideas of cause and effect. Snap Circuits will introduce them to the art of electrical engineering. Tangrams will give them an opportunity to utilize the foundations of geometry while integrating the art of patterns. Tens blocks and unit cubes, in addition to being helpful math manipulatives, give students a chance to further build and see the effects of symmetry and patterning.
Students will also have materials to let their creativity fly- with scrapbook paper and wasabi tape, they can create a visually-appealing explanation of their works. While it is important that students be able to build and grow through exploration, it is also important that they are able to present their findings.
The materials that I am seeking for my students will let them tackle problems in ways that they may never have thought about before!
