My students need class sets of the novels "Mister Pip", "Sold", and "Soldier Boys". Mainstream literature does not often reflect the experiences my students face. It does not always allow my students to see themselves within the characters in the story. These novels revolve around characters from diverse backgrounds with many unique experiences. Although their experiences are unique my students will be able to relate to the young adults the stories focus on. Through reading these novels my students will be able to have engaging discussions on race, gender, class, war, history, and education. Students will be able to compare and contrast events in the novels with current events going on in our world today. My students will be able to see themselves and their experiences in the characters in the stories.
