In this time of financial crisis, resources have been cut tremendously in the New York City Public School System. Teachers do not receive any resources to actively engage students in reading and to prepare students for New York State tests. In my school, students come from families of low socioeconomic status. Unfortunately parents cannot afford to buy their children materials to promote their interests in reading. My students are bright and continuously eager to learn new information. They enjoy read-alouds and challenge themselves to read various genres independently. However, the majority of my students are English Language Learners comprehending texts below a Third grade level. This is because my students need additional resources to apply the skills taught during our literacy block. Having reading games such as Quick-Pick Reading Comprehension Activity Cards, Read & Find Character Traits, and Fact or Opinion? Treasure Hunt will not only keep my students motivated but also allow them to be more confident in their reading ability.
