  • Intervention Books That Are Actually Interesting!

    Funded Sep 21, 2022

Thank you so much for the novels. My students are so excited to crack open the new books and get to reading. These novels that are part of an intervention program allow my students to practice their fluency, reading comprehension and critical thinking and inferential skills. Some of the lessons we have engaged in include: analyzing character traits, analyzing the impact the setting has on the character and the plot and determining the central idea and theme of the text. In addition, my scholars are able to study the writer's craft in books that are engaging and relevant.

In my classroom students are given time to read silently, take notes on what they are reading and discuss what they are reading with a peer. Students that are especially enjoying the new books include students that may not get to order new books on Amazon or go the the bookstore. My scholars who are underserved as also enjoying these books and building their reading confidence and their reading level. Thank you for supporting us in increasing literacy!”

  • Graphic Novels to Grow Great Readers!

    Funded May 3, 2022

Thank you so much for the graphic novels! Our students participated in a Book Tasting in which they got to sample each of the books before selecting their top picks. Students were then grouped based on their selections so that they could read and discuss their chosen graphic novel.

Soon after the books arrived I unboxed them and then displayed them much like you would see at the big front table in a Barnes and Noble. Anticipation was built and many students couldn't wait to crack open the novels! One, student who's mother has asked me for book suggestions could not but down his copy of Black Panther! I sent her a picture of her child nose deep in the graphic novel!

Scholars used their characterization skills to discuss how the characters grew and changed throughout the novel as well as how the setting affected the characters and conflict. In our classroom reading is not just sitting silently while scanning the page in also includes taking notes on post-its, discussing parts of the the text that are interesting, baffling or even funny. At the end of the year when I was putting away the books one student said, "THIS is the best book, I've ever read!" #winning

    Thank you.”
