My classroom is home to 25 of the sweetest, kindest, and smartest 5th graders I have ever had to pleasure of teaching. One day after sitting all day in cold metal chairs, one of my kiddos raised the question, "Why do we need to use these old chairs, can't we stand or move around the room to work?" This single question created a movement in my room. Why do we need to stay in one spot all day? My students began research to see if sitting in one place was better for learning or if moving around the room - and into more comfortable locations - would provide a better learning environment. A few students brought in different pillows, two yoga balls, and one camp chair. We learned that we enjoyed sitting in different chairs while we were learning, and for some wiggly kiddos the yoga balls were game changers. It was brought to my attention by a giggly student that I should ask the community if they could help us. So here we are, asking for some different seats to help us create the learning environment of our dreams.
