Makerspaces provide hands-on, creative ways to encourage students to design, experiment, build, and invent as they deeply engage in science, engineering and tinkering. ... Therefore, it must be designed to accommodate a wide range of activities, tools and materials. By placing Ozobots and Botley equipment in a Makerspace, students can engage in technology based coding activities. The engineering component of STEM is also put into use by students when Q-BA-MAZE equipment is added. Students will have open access to these STEM items which will give them opportunities to problem solve and use critical thinking skills. By providing the Media Center with a Makerspace, I am giving students in k-5th the opportunity to create and explore different realms of science, technology, engineering and math. Though sometimes confused as solely open play and contemporary arts and crafts, educators have found that Makerspace projects provide more engaging opportunities to reach standards-based expectations than yet more textbook or worksheet time. Students are given a nonrestrictive environment to create, explore, experiment and test. A Makerspace gives students opportunities to actively engage in STEM curriculum that allows students to freely explore.
