School and students deserve a fresh start!
Funded Sep 5, 2018Thank you so much for your generous donation! We have already gotten a lot of use out of the materials you donated.
"You mean- we each get our own pair of scissors? Wow!" Yup! Your donation means that when we do labs or STEAM projects- each student gets their own set of tools. Scissors, markers, colored pencils glue...and the students are thrilled! We have even set up a student resource station with the rolling cart. At any time a student needs a tool- they help themselves. Because they are so thankful- they are also taking great care in keeping them organized.
Some of the projects that you can see in the photographs include
1. Biotic Vs. Abiotic Collages: Students searched for examples of living and non living things and categorized them on a poster as a class. If a clipping was confusing, we discussed as a class and then placed accordingly. Some were so tricky- we decided it was best to put them on the line between living and non living. For example- a photo of a water glass with lemon slices. The glass, ice, and water are all abiotic, but the lemons have cells!
2. Building Mitosis Models: Student created their own artistic and scientific model of mitosis. The inspiration for this STEAM activity was to create a museum exhibit that thoughtfully, simply and beautifully demonstrated mitosis for museum guests.
3. DNA Models: Student cut out and created long chains of DNA using the coloring materials, glue and scissors. Students could investigate the importance of shape and structure of nucleotides. The models could even be used to demonstrate DNA replication. We have the molecule hanging in the window like a garland!
My students have expressed interest in making more models. They are creative and love integrating art and engineering with science. I can't wait to see what we create next!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Clark
