My junior high students are dedicated and hard-working kids who strive for excellence (even though they're also sometimes just squirrely teenagers). Their creativity and willingness to take risks is impressive. Until this year, the yearbook staff has been combined with the student council class, doing a disservice to those who want to learn about principles of design and journalism. I convinced my principal to create a new journalism class with the intent of publishing both the yearbook and a school newspaper. I have a whole class of students who are excited to take on the challenge of learning about writing, layout design, and other principles of journalism—and I'm really excited to have an opportunity to teach them.
