I have many students who are never recognized for their accomplishments. They may be students who are unathletic, struggle socially, and struggle academically. Many of those students have not yet found where they "fit" in school. Many are part of the special education program, or are English Language Learners, but all of them have a brilliance and confidence waiting to be explored. I work with 6th, 7th and 8th graders, in a high poverty area, most of whom are well below grade level in reading. With the current budget cuts in education, most of my students end up wandering the streets after school instead of being part of self esteem building and academically challenging programs. With the increasing rates of high school dropouts, we need to get creative to help our students feel personal success and investment in their education.
