I am a recent graduate from the Academy for Urban School Leadership. During my residency year, I've experienced teaching low-income, minority students, and I recognize that learning is social and emotional. Many of my students have faced devasting hardships. As a trauma-informed educator, I desire to increase minority achievement in the classroom by creating a comfortable climate that encourages collaboration, innovation, and flexibility. One of my goals as a first-year teacher is to provide a classroom that gives off a “homey” feeling and serves as a safe space for students to build a culture of community. Including classroom furniture such as rugs, couches, lamps, curtains, and plants all seem like minutiae details, but I have witnessed the positive effects of students feeling comfortable in their classrooms. By donating to my project, you will not only help create a welcoming environment for students to learn, but you will also combat the achievement gap by providing resources that assist with students' social-emotional well being. The students will utilize classroom furniture during morning meetings, where we do our social-emotional learning lesson to start the day, and during silent reading time or for group work.
