I am designing my new 9th-grade curriculum to be a study of immigrant stories. Jean Kwok's Girl in Translation is a lovely addition to this new curriculum. It has many themes that will spark powerful discussions. We need to be always mindful of the stories that we choose to explore, and I am excited to bring the brilliant work of an Asian-American author to my students. I want all of my students to see themselves reflected in the books that we read, and my Asian students do not often get a chance to see themselves represented. These students will work through a unit where they will learn to write memoirs about their own journeys. Through this unit, they will work on many descriptive writing skills.
