Hello! My name is Ms. Hawes, and I am a 6th grade math teacher in Virginia. I'm often asked why math, and even more frequently WHY MIDDLE SCHOOL! The answers to both are simple, I'm trying to make a difference. I chose math not just because it is something that I enjoy, but because I wanted to become a strong female role model in a male driven subject. I want young ladies to blossom just as much as the young men in my classroom so that they can go onto careers in fields that they may not have otherwise. People often grimace when they learn that I teach middle schoolers. I will say that it is definitely not for everyone. That is the reason that I specifically chose this age group. Middle school is a time of rampant self discovery. It's important that middle schoolers have teachers who love their quirks so that they can develop into the outstanding young leaders that they are capable of becoming.
